SEE ALSO

The National Program of Electric Power Conservation (Procel) aims at fostering the rationalization of electric power consumption, combating wastes and reducing costs in sectorial investments, in addition to increasing energy efficiency.  Created by federal government, in 1985, the program is carried out by Eletrobras and uses the company's funds, from the Global Reversal Reserve and also funds from international entities.

In 22 years of existence, Procel helped save 28.5 million MWh, a consumption equivalent to 16.3 million of residences and to the energy generated by a hydroelectric plant with installed capacity of 6,841MW, which would have an approximate cost of R$ 19.9 billion. In order to reach this result, the investment done was of R$ 1 billion, obtained through the Global Reversion Reserve (R$ 628 million), Eletrobras (R$ 359 million) and Energetic Efficiency Program (R$ 37.5 million), initiative which joined Bird's Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Eletrobras.

Incentive to economy
Created in 1993, Procel Label of Energy Saving indicates to consumer, upon the purchase, the products that have the best energy efficiency levels within each category. The purpose is stimulating the manufacturing and sale of more efficient products, contributing for the technologic development and reduction of environmental impacts.

Since 1993, the National Award of Energy Conservation and Rational Use, known as Procel Award, has recognized the efforts and results obtained by agents acting to combat energy waste. Granted ever year, the award aims at stimulating society to implement actions that may reduce electric power consumption.

Procel also counts on the following subprograms: Procel GEM (Municipal Energy Management), Sanear, Educação, Indústria, Edifica, Prédios Públicos and Reluz.
